National Health Insurance
All foreign residents who are registered in Wako City (whose period of stay is for one year or longer) must enroll in the National Health Insurance. (Except for those who are enrolled in an Employees' Health Insurance at their place of employment) Even if you enter Japan with a permit to stay for shorter than one year, you would be allowed to change your visa status and stay for one year or longer for the reason of attending school or working in Japan. In that case, you are obliged to join the National Health Insurance. Please submit a student registration certificate with signature or a certificate of employment with signature (The period of stay should be described.) to the Health Promotion Div. to enroll in the National Health Insurance.
All members of the National Health Insurance must pay insurance premiums that are calculated based on the previous year's income. When members are injured or become ill, they are responsible for 30% of the medical expense and some portion of the costs for medication.
